UNGA RESOLUTION ENTITLED “EDUCATION FOR DEMOCRACY” ADOPTED AT MONGOLIA’S INITIATIVE

On 16 November 2016, the resolution entitled Education for Democracy has been unanimously adopted at Plenary meeting of the 71st session of the UN General Assembly, at the initiative of Mongolia.

In his introductory remarks, H.E.Mr.Sukhbold Sukhee, Permanent Representative of Mongolia to the UN, underscored that through this resolution, we recognized education’s key role in development, peace, tolerance, human fulfilment and sustainable development and reaffirmed the fundamental link between democratic governance, peace and development and the promotion and protection of all human rights.

He also pointed out that the resolution contains updated languages on encouraging Member States and national, regional and local education authorities to integrate education for democracy – along with civic, human rights and sustainable development education – into their curricula, to strengthen programmes aimed at the promotion of democratic values and to engage civil society, academia, the private sector, funds and other stakeholders including the United Nations.

            The resolution entitled Education for Democracy has received a wide co-sponsorship of more than forty countries from various regions, including Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Costa Rica, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Georgia, Germany, Latvia, Finland, Hungary, India, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Mexico, Monaco, Montenegro, Morocco, Peru, Poland, Republic of Moldova, Romania, Paraguay, Philippines, Republic of Korea, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, and United States of America.
